Pink Paradise: Japan Looks Surreal As Cherry Blossoms Begin To Bloom For The Season

Cherry blossoms in Tokyo have begun blooming, the Meteorological Agency announced Tuesday in an early record start seen only twice before as revellers are set to flock to parks and other sites for viewing parties that had largely been curtailed by COVID-19.

Blooming season came early

Typically, cherry blossoms in Japan reach their peak season between the end of March and the beginning of April. However, this year, the iconic blossoms appeared ten days earlier than usual since 1953, when data began being collected.

Experts say the early start of cherry blossoms, or sakura is the result of unusually warm weather, which is being fuelled by climate change. Temperatures have been rising since the beginning of March, leading to quicker bud growth. The blossoms are expected to be in full-bloom within the next week, the weather agency said.

According to the weather agency, more than five blossoms were seen from Somei-Yoshino cherry blossom trees at Yasukuni Shrine in the capital.

”Today, on March 14, we hereby declare the sakura blossoming in Tokyo. We’ve seen many warm days in March, climate change may also have played a part,” an official from the Japan Meteorological Agency said in an announcement.

Cherry blossoms galore on Twitter

Meanwhile, social media users shared beautiful pictures and videos of the cherry blossom season.

The news comes amid an easing of the government’s masking guidelines, making it easier for crowds to flock to cherry blossom viewing parties for the first time since large gatherings were frowned upon — and sometimes blocked by local authorities — amid the COVID-19 pandemic.
