Upsets lead to major changes in USA Today/NWCA/AWN Division I Coaches Poll

Several upsets over the weekend changes the wrestling landscape and they changed the Top 25 of the USA Today/NWCA/AWN Division I Coaches Poll released on Tuesday.

Penn State (10-0) again received all 10 first-place votes, but after the top-ranked Nittany Lions, the top ten saw quite a bit of movement.

Minnesota (7-1) fell from No. 2 to No. 4 after the Golden Gophers lost over the weekend in Ann Arbor, Mich., to the then No. 19 Wolverines 19-14. Michigan, which jumped seven spots to No. 12 this week, also beat Illinois over the weekend.

Iowa (11-1) moved up to No. 2. The Hawkeyes defeated Big Ten rival Nebraska 22-9 on Saturday. Cornell (5-0) defeated Harvard and moved up a spot to No. 3. Oklahoma and Oklahoma State were both dealt losses over the weekend and slid accordingly.

In Norman, Northern Iowa (6-0) stayed unbeaten in taking out the Sooners 19-17. The Panthers moved up four spot to No. 5, its highest under coach Doug Schwab.

Oklahoma (7-1) fell to No. 6. Missouri (4-0) held steady at No. 7, while Pittsburgh made a five-spot jump after beating Oklahoma State 19-18 on criteria on Sunday. These Panthers (9-1) break into the Top 10 for the first time this season. Oklahoma State fell from No. 5 to No. 9. The Cowboys are 4-4 on the year.

North Dakota State (6-3) broke into the Top 25 after two weekend wins, including a road victory at No. 20 Oregon State. The Bison debut at No. 23, while Oregon State fell four spots to No. 24.

Every conference is represented in the Top 25. The Big Ten has the most representation with 10 teams. The Big 12 and ACC have three teams each, while the EIWA, Mid-American Conference and Pac-12 each have two. The SoCon and Western Wrestling Conference have one team ranked.
