UFC: "The Notorious" Conor McGregor Ep. 2 Review
By Jeremy Peeples, WrestlingObserver.com
The first episode of “The Notorious” focused on Conor’s combeack in 2014. Episode two is entitled “The Fight Business” and will look at his ability to learn how to promote a fight. We see Conor driving around while clips of his promos are played. After knocking out Brandao, he’s got a fight in Las Vegas six weeks later. He celebrated for one day and prepared to make a new contract with the UFC – it’s time for the UFC to meet “the businessman” for the first time.
Conor meets with his agent Audie, who is on the phone with Lorenzo about a meeting. They’ll go the private gym in one of his hotels to train and discuss business. Lorenzo says he’s not just a great fighter, but he has something about him that people are attracted to. It’s that X factor that made the company feel confident and be a main eventer. Lorenzo puts over Poirier as being the sixth-ranked fighter in the world and a big test for Conor. Conor tells Lorenzo that he wants a stadium show and Lorenzo says that he’s progressing in a different way by being in Vegas.
The next morning, Conor’s agent wakes him up and they order breakfast. Conor goes to media day and says that he says things and proves it with each fight. “If you listen closely, you can hear every featherweight in the division crying!” Conor and Poirier go nose to nose and we see a clip of the Jones-Cormier scuffle from the same presser. Conor twirls his mustache during the ride over to “real business” with Lorenzo. Lorenzo talks about the history of Ali-Foreman and how he obtained President Mobutu’s chair. Conor goes from a quick meeting with Lorenzo and says that the UFC takes care of its fighters and today, he signed a big deal.
We go to Los Angeles, where Conor sees a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles poster and says he wants to see it while doing a shoulder blade workout. Conor takes a selfie in a room before he does a Q&A amidst a sea of boos. He says he’ll take Dustin’s head clean off, and while he thinks Conor’s all talk, he’ll think differently with his nose plastered to his nose. “It’s gonna be a first round KO – but don’t get me wrong, he’s a nice little kid who grew up in some backwoods town!” They roll up a Conor poster and Conor warns that no should ever mess with that guy. That reminds me so much of The Rock admiring his own visage on Raw in 1998 – Conor is something special.
Conor says that headlining a show in Dublin was a dream come true and that he doesn’t like repeating answers, but it’s part of the game. He goes to the Fox lot and marks out over seeing The Simpsons painting on a building while they take UFC fighter profile video and photos. Conor’s a big fan of this portion, and it concludes with a staredown with Poirier. Joe Rogan says that Conor is a unique man in a sport full of them, but Poirier has a chance to shut down the hype train. We see highlights of each men in a fight while Conor says he’ll put him away. Episode three will seemingly be devoted to the fight and the aftermath.
