Trump’s ‘Space Force’: Could the new military branch fuel a 2020 arms race?

It’s a name that conjures up images of galactic battles depicted in sci-fi movies like Star Wars and Star Trek.  

Donald Trump’s plans for a "Space Force" were announced on Thursday, a typically theatrical term from the former celebrity businessman for what will be America’s sixth branch of military. 

The move is more bureaucratic than its colourful title suggests but Mike Pence’s warning of the next military front highlighted what is at stake. 

"Now the time has come to write the next great chapter in the history of our armed forces, to prepare for the next battlefield where America’s best and bravest will be called to deter and defeat a new generation of threats to our people, to our nation,"…
