Man Injected Heroin Before Fatal Ice Cream Shop Hit And Run: Cops

An elderly retiree had just stopped at his favorite ice cream shop when a driver, who’d just injected heroin, pulled around a vehicle that had stopped in the intersection and ran him over. The driver then sped away from the scene, authorities said.

Police arrived to the scene and found the 70-year-old lying face-down and unconscious in the roadway with head and leg injuries, the DA’s office said. He was taken to St. Mary Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead less than an hour later.

After a week’s investigation, Anthony M. Woods, 41, of Nottingham Court was arrested and charged with third-degree murder and related counts in the incident.

The incident occurred at around 9 p.m. on Aug. 21 as Emanuel Weintraub, 70 was crossing the street after getting ice cream at JoJo’s on New Falls Road in Levittown, the DA’s office said.

Woods was arraigned Monday and held without bail, the DA’s office said. He is slated for a preliminary hearing on Sept. 11, according to the DA’s office.

It was all caught on surveillance video and had multiple witnesses, authorities allege.

An affidavit for probable cause says that Weintraub was crossing the two-lane roadway in a crosswalk when a four-door sedan crossed a double-yellow line to pass another car that had stopped at the intersection to let Weintraub get by safely.

The passing vehicle struck Weintraub, throwing him at least 20 feet in the air, and drove off without stopping, the affidavit said.

When initially interviewed by Falls Township Police, the affidavit said Woods told investigators that he had broken the windshield of his car while “copping drugs” in Philadelphia, and that the windshield was repaired by an auto glass business in Trenton.

The owner of the repair shop told police that Woods, after speaking to investigators, had contacted him, telling him not to talk to police and asking him to throw away the receipt from the work done on Woods’ car, according to the affidavit.

On Monday, police executed a search warrant at Woods’ home, finding empty heroin bags and a receipt from the auto-glass repair shop for a new windshield on his 2007 Nissan Altima, the affidavit said.

Woods’ father told police that his son had called him and admitted to killing the victim, saying he would turn himself in today.

In a second interview today with police, Woods admitted being the driver of the car that struck Weintraub, the affidavit said.

Woods told police that he believed he had struck a child instead of an adult, and that he did not stop because he believed he had drugs in his system, the affidavit said.

The case has been assigned for prosecution to Deputy District Attorney Robert D. James, chief of the Homicide by Vehicle Division. It is being investigated by the Falls Township Police Department.
