Walt Disney's Childhood Home In Chicago Restored

CHICAGO — A ribbon-cutting ceremony was held this week on Walt Disney’s birthday to celebrate the restoration of his childhood home in Chicago’s Hermosa neighborhood. The home has been revamped to look like it did when it was built in 1893.

The celebration was held on Wednesday evening, and featured appearances from Mickey Mouse, Chicago Bulls player Robin Lopez and Disney brothers’ descendant, Roy Patrick Disney. The event also included a choir performance by Nixon Elementary students and a candle-lighting ceremony.

“I am thrilled that The Walt Disney Birthplace restoration is complete and that I get to be there to dedicate the home and to celebrate my great uncle Walt’s 117th birthday,” Roy Patrick Disney said in a statement. “And that it so happens to be Mickey Mouse’s 90th birthday as well. I am filled with pride knowing that my great grandfather, Elias, and great grandmother Flora designed and built this house, and that Flora gave birth to both Roy and Walt within these walls.”

Walt Disney grew up in the house, at 2156 N. Tripp Ave., with his brother, Roy O. Disney. The two went on to start Walt Disney Productions, which later became the Walt Disney Company.

“I am eternally grateful to all those who fought and worked so hard to make this dream of preserving the Disney family home a reality,” Roy Patrick Disney said. It makes me feel as if you really can go home. And to think…it all started with this house, and then the mouse!”

When Dina Benadon and Brent Young heard that the home was in disrepair, they decided to buy the home and restore it. The Walt Disney Company and other donors provided funding to assist the new homeowners with the restoration.

“Our project is about more than just a restoration,” Benadon and Young wrote on the home’s website. “It is also an opportunity to research this period of the Disney family history which has sparked a larger vision for the home beyond the restoration.”
