Watch: Young Alexandria Cancer Survivor Gets Birthday Surprise
ALEXANDRIA, VA — If there’s anything that could light up the face of Whitaker Weinburger, it’s the character Bumblebee from “Transformers.” Whenever he sees a yellow car, he yells “Bumblebee!”
In that regard, Whitaker is like many other kids. But for much of his young life, he’s has been battling cancer. According to Alexandria City Public Schools, Whitaker was diagnosed with stage 4 neuroblastoma at 13-months-old. He’s undergone six rounds of chemotherapy, 20 rounds of radiation and a double stem cell transplant. Now he’s in remission, and his parents wanted to make his fourth birthday one he wouldn’t forget.
His parents planned to surprise him with yellow vehicles that would remind him of Bumblebee. With help from the Alexandria Sheriff’s Office and other partners, the family put out a call for anyone with yellow vehicles to come out and surprise Whitaker on his route to preschool.
Participants were asked to show up at 6:30 a.m. at the Burke & Herbert Bank at 1705 Fern Street. From there, Alexandria sheriff’s deputies directed them to park on the route Whitaker takes to Charles Barrett Elementary.
