Where Are They Now?: Notable Pickup Artists from the Golden Age of Pickup Artistry

Pickup-artist culture peaked in 2007, when VH1 ordered two seasons of “The Pickup Artist,” a show hosted by a Canadian man who went by the name Mystery. (In the world of P.U.A., monikers were used to protect practitioners’ identities, as they were doing some truly reprehensible things.) Here, more than a decade past their prime, we check in with some of the once-greats.

Money Mouse a.k.a. Alan Mouse

Alan (Money Mouse) Mouse was one of Mystery’s star pupils, and also the associate treasurer of the Backwoods Secret Violence Committee (currently under investigation by the F.B.I.). In more recent years, he has launched his own line of e-cigarettes, called HEY GUYS, and a signature line of vodka, also called HEY GUYS.

Delta of Penus a.k.a. Ryan Zimmerman-Gore

“Deltmaster-P” proudly maintained his ride-or-die wingman reputation through two episodes of the streaming show “The Gamifiers,” before being mysteriously kidnapped from the set during the filming of Episode 3. A large ransom was posted for his release, and Delta of Penus returned to “The Gamifiers” in Season 9 as an All-Star.

Waxed Denim a.k.a. Rob Garcia

A student of Neil (Style) Strauss and a former close wingman to James (Matador) Matador, Waxed Denim is actually not so bad. He has disavowed P.U.A. and currently works as the director of the Calderon School of Music in East Hanover, New Jersey.

Keith Guitar a.k.a. Jason Roy

K.G. appeared in Season 2 of “I Hate You Get Over Here,” a post-“Gamifiers” P.U.A. vlog produced by one of the less famous guys from “Jackass.” He now lives in Wisconsin and writes the e-newsletter “How to Get Good at a Guitar by Keith Guitar.” He is no longer active in the P.U.A. community and is considered defunct by the larger manosphere.

Marvellous a.k.a. Adolph (Dolph) Del Mar

Marvellous Adolph (Dolph) Del Mar studied under Mystery and has been linked to J-Dawg as a former wingman. (J-Dawg reached out to us via D.M. with the comment: “It was just this one summer when no one was around. we only hung out like twice.”) For Dolph’s fortieth birthday, Matador and Juggler, from the original VH1 cast, surprised him with tickets to “Jersey Boys.” He was very surprised and later called the show “so good.”

Pumpy a.k.a. Underscore a.k.a. Health [given name unknown]

Health was a popular P.U.A. who first came to prominence on Internet comment boards in early 2000, where his writing on wellness earned him a loyal following. He now works as a personal trainer and is the C.E.O. of Pumpy’s Exercise Challenge, a personal-training app.
