Expert Vacuum Forming Services for Custom Solutions
In May of 2024, the United States produced 8.7 billion pounds of plastic parts. Plastic components offer a strong, inexpensive, and light alternative to those made from other materials. They require specific manufacturing processes though, such as vacuum forming.
This versatile method is used to make everything from food packaging to construction, agriculture, medical devices, and automotive and aerospace components. It provides many distinct advantages.
This article explains what those are, along with the basics of vacuum-forming services and their applications. Keep reading to find out if vacuum-formed parts are right for your business.
What Is Vacuum Forming?
Vacuum forming is a manufacturing process that combines heat and vacuum pressure to produce three-dimensional parts. It does so by heating and stretching sheets of thermoplastic over a mold.
Vacuum forming is a simplified version of thermoforming. The latter is reserved for producing complex shapes and configurations.
How Does the Vacuum-Forming Process Work?
The vacuum forming procedure begins with clamping a sheet of plastic–such as polystyrene, polycarbonate, and PVC–into a frame. It is then heated in an oven until it softens and becomes pliable.
The heating process requires meticulous control. The goal is to allow the plastic to reach an ideal forming temperature without melting.
Once heated, the plastic sheet is secured over a mold, which can be made of wood, metal, or resin. A vacuum pump then removes the air between the mold and the heated plastic sheet. This causes the plastic to tightly conform to the shape of the mold.
The plastic is then allowed to cool. Once set, it is removed from the mold. The final part can then undergo finishing processes.
Advantages of Vacuum Forming
There are many benefits of vacuum forming. One is that it is extremely versatile. It can be used with a wide range of thermoplastic materials to create products of different sizes and shapes.
Vacuum forming is ideal for achieving consistent results, even in medium and high production runs. It is also excellent for making high-quality surface finishes.
One of the biggest advantages of vacuum forming is that it is inexpensive. The molds used are much less costly to make than those used in other plastic parts manufacturing processes, like injection molding.
Speed is a final advantage of vacuum forming. Prototyping and production are quick, which makes it ideal for projects with limited time constraints.
Are There Limitations of Vacuum Forming?
Vacuum-forming services may not be ideal for every application. For instance, not all plastics work well with it. However, there are usually alternatives that manufacturers can recommend, depending on your manufacturing requirements.
Also, industrial vacuum forming is best suited for components with relatively simple geometries. For instance, parts that have deep undercuts or intricate details may benefit from other manufacturing processes.
