RIDGEFIELD, CT — Gofer Ice Cream, in the middle of everything at 407 Main Street, will be closing up shop at the end of September.

Owner Eric Barrow had high hopes.

“I was hopeful that if we had great ice cream, which we do, and we gave great service, which we have, and we have a nice atmosphere, which people here enjoy, folks would give us a shot,” Barrow said. “And we had a pretty good first year. Unfortunately, it hasn’t returned.”

Barrow opened his franchise in October 2021, serving up Razzles, Flying Discs, Gofer Bites, and more traditional confection seven days a week,

Gofer Ice Cream also has franchise locations in Greenwich, Darien, New Canaan, Stamford, Westport and Wilton. The brand prides itself on serving up “the nostalgia of a classic scoop shop with a new generation of flavors and quality products.”

But that kind of attention to detail and quality doesn’t always pay off, Barrow said.

“One of my customers emailed me this morning saying how disappointed he was, and that my decision to be a wholly customer-oriented in my approach to my business was the right one,” he told Patch. “It just doesn’t always work out, unfortunately.”

Barrow’s tough sledding on Main Street isn’t enough to melt the enthusiasm of other local ice cream entrepreneurs. The former Ridgefield Ice Cream Shop at 680 Danbury Road is on track to re-open as Flobee’s later this year.
