Apparent Anger Misdirected At Darien Mayor
DARIEN, IL – Darien is bringing back its old “Ask the Mayor” feature in the city’s online newsletter.
But Mayor Joseph Marchese prefers the questions be connected to Darien – the one in Illinois, that is.
The city advertised the “Ask the Mayor” feature in its weekly newsletter Thursday.

At Monday’s City Council meeting, Marchese said he had received two emails in response. But neither appeared to have anything to do with Darien.

“One individual asked why I allowed a project to take place where I closed down the Third Street train station,” the mayor said. “I emailed the person back that we don’t have a train in Darien and we don’t have a Third Street.”

He speculated the person may have been referring to a Darien in another state. The United States has four other incorporated Dariens – in Connecticut, Wisconsin, Georgia and New York.
Of the other Dariens, only the one in Wisconsin has a railroad and a Third Street. But there is no train station.
There is a Third Street train station in Geneva in Kane County. The building includes the Third Street Station Bar and Grill.
The other message to the mayor?
“I got another one this weekend from a woman who was very much offended. She said, ‘You are taking the Goodwin Shopping Center, and you’re renaming it the Goosehead Senior Center,'” the mayor said.
That, the woman said, was a blow to local senior citizens.
The trouble is, Darien does not have a Goodwin Shopping Center or Goosehead Senior Center.
An online search produced no results for either entity anywhere in the United States. It appears there is a Goodwin Shopping Center in Russia. Does Vladimir Putin have a complaint line?
