Worcester will also easily keep its title as the second-largest city in New England. Third-largest Providence actually lost about 150 people, according to the new estimates. Boston also lost a significant share of residents, dropping from 678,617 in 2020 to about 653,000 in 2023. Springfield and Hartford, Conn., also lost residents.
The new Census figures show that Worcester’s population declined following the COVID-19 pandemic, dropping just under 206,000 in 2021 and 2022. According to the Census bureau, cities with populations of 50,000 or more grew by an average of 0.2% in the Northeast. Those include Portland, Maine, New Haven, Conn., and Stamford, Conn.
