What happened and how?

According to The Economic Times, Army sources on Tuesday said that Manoj Kumar took training, had an appointment letter and an ID and received Rs 12,500, too, following his recruitment in July.

However, it turns out all of it was fake, and he had been tricked by an army jawan, who has now been arrested. Shocking, isn’t it?

Manoj Kumar, who believed he had been recruited thanks to Rahul Singh, a sepoy in the Indian Army, did sentry duty at an army camp in Punjab’s Pathankot for four months. Manoj Kumar said he paid Rahul Singh ₹16 lakh for the job. To avoid suspicion, ₹ 12,500 “salary” was deposited into Manoj Kumar’s account every month.

Both natives of western UP met at a recruitment rally in 2019, where Manoj Kumar was rejected while Rahul Singh got the job.

Officer got Kumar the job but resigned himself

On October 22, Rahul Singh, 25, who joined the Army in 2019, resigned on health grounds. During his stint, he would pose as a high-ranking officer and “help” young aspirants get recruited. His “two aides would spread the word” and draw the aspirants to him, and Kumar was one of them.

Around the same time, during his stay in the camp, Kumar’s Army friends became suspicious of his credentials. Subsequently, they reported it to military intelligence (MI), which further probed the matter.

According to an FIR filed by Manoj, he was posted with the 108 Infantry Battalion TA (Territorial Army) ‘Mahar’ in Pathankot’s 272 Transit Camp, complete with ID and uniform.

The reality

In reality, Ghaziabad-based Kumar (in his early 20s) was simply doing odd jobs and covering for Rahul Singh, who “recruited” him in return for cash. Singh originally belongs to the Daurala region of Meerut. He was arrested along with one of his aides for the “recruitment scam” on Tuesday.

Based on MI (military intelligence) inputs, Meerut police have arrested Rahul Singh and one of his accomplices, Bittu Singh. His other aide, Raja Singh, is still at large. Kumar has filed an FIR and all three have been booked under IPC Sections 420 (cheating), 467 (forgery of valuable security), 471 (fraud), 406 (criminal breach of trust), 323 (voluntarily causing hurt), 506 (criminal intimidation) and 120B (criminal conspiracy).
