In a shocking incident, Delhi Commission for Women chairperson Swati Maliwal was allegedly dragged by a car for 10-15 metres when she was reprimanding a drunk man who made inappropriate comments at her.

The incident happened around 3 am on Thursday when Maliwal and her team were conducting an inspection near the All India Institute Of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in New Delhi.

Molested while inspecting women safety

According to Maliwal, she was standing near Gate number 2 of the AIIMS when a man driving a white-coloured car stopped his car near where she was standing and “made indecent gestures” at her.

The car driver allegedly offered her a lift and asked the DCW chief to sit inside his vehicle, claimed Maliwal. When the DCW chief reprimanded him, the man reportedly went away but returned a short while and again repeated his actions.

When she refused again and went near the driver’s side window to reprimand him, the man rolled up the car’s glass window and her hand got stuck. Following this, she was dragged for about 10-15 metres.

Can only imagine situation of other woman

“Late last night, I was inspecting the situation of women’s security in Delhi. A car driver molested me in an inebriated condition and when I caught hold of him, he locked my hand in the car window and dragged me. Thankfully, I was able to escape. If the Chairperson of the Women’s Commission is not safe in Delhi, then one can only imagine the situation for other women,” Maliwal wrote on Twitter.

Accused arrested

Based on her complaint, an FIR was registered in the Kotla police station, and the accused, identified as Harish Chandra, a resident of Delhi’s Sangam Vihar, was arrested.

He has been booked under the IPC Section 354 (molestation) and sections include 323/341/509, along with Section 185 of the Motor Vehicles Act.

According to the police, Chandra was drunk when he misbehaved with the DCW chief.

The police official said that a PCR call was received at around 3.12 am and a police team, including ACP Hauz Khas, reached the spot at around 3.20 am and the accused was apprehended.

“The police took a written complaint from Maliwal and sent her and the accused for medical examination,” DCP South Chandan Chowdhary said.

Delhi, the most unsafe city for women

The incident involving a high-profile personality like Maliwal once again shows why Delhi has the dubious distinction of being the most unsafe city for women in India.

According to the National Crime Record Bureau (NCRB) data, in 2021, Delhi was the most unsafe metropolitan city for women across India. Delhi recorded 13,892 cases of crimes against women in 2021.
