Passenger Flying Business Class Served One Banana As In-Flight Meal, Says 'It's Quite Shocking'
“Frankly quite shocked,” Kris Chari, a passenger onboard a Japan Airlines, said. Chari was flying business class on Tuesday from Jakarta in Indonesia to Tokyo in Japan when he was served one banana as the in-flight meal. Yes, that’s true.
Kris Chari was travelling on an over 7-hour flight and he pre-ordered VGML (vegan) option from the pre-lunch snack menu but little did he know that it would consist of just a banana with chopsticks. Here’s some context.

Some context on what others got as meals
There were two meal services during the flight — the first was a snack and light refreshment served after takeoff and the second was lunch, a Japan Airlines spokesperson told Insider.
The snack option for non-vegan passengers consisted of seared tuna with a Moroccan-style eggplant salad, cheese with orange salsa, and a baguette, per the airline’s menu and Chari’s experience. Perplexed, he complained on the air travel forum FlyerTalk.
“Before takeoff today my flight attendant confirmed that I ordered VGML and that my breakfast was a banana, by which I mistakenly assumed she meant that breakfast included a banana,” they wrote. “When she served the banana after takeoff I thought it was just an underwhelming appetizer, but it was in fact the entire meal service!”
But, he was served a single banana
Chari told Insider he expected to receive the equivalent of what non-vegan passengers were served as a snack, such as a sandwich, salad, vegan cheese, or a baguette. “Instead, I was served a single banana,” he said.
“It’s a bit insulting to be served a single banana while others are given a far more substantial and flavorful menu,” he said. “It seems especially important given the growth in the number of vegans and vegetarians.”
Chari added that his lunch was “barely seasoned spaghetti.” The non-vegan lunch options included grilled beef tenderloin and grilled salmon between the airline’s Japanese and Western menus.

‘Other meals were bad too’
He wrote that other meals were bad too, but “nothing quite as insubstantial as this” in reference to the banana.
“It was cute of the crew to serve the banana with chopsticks, though!” Chari wrote.
A “vegetarian vegan meal” listed on the airline’s website is accompanied by a photo showing a spread of halal sorbet, a baguette, a dish with rice and multiple vegetable bowls.
