Key Materials Trends for Fall/Winter 2016-17 from Pitti Filati

November 4, 2019 0 By JohnValbyNation

In amongst the S/S16 fashion trade events taking place around the
world this summer, last month also saw the Fall/Winter 2016-17 edition
of Pitti Filati, Florence’s premier textile and knitwear show. Hosted
at the grand Fortezza de Basso venue, Pitti Filati highlights the
latest styles and technological innovations in knitting yarn for
thousands of buyers, press and industry professionals.

This season, a contemporary take on handcrafting was a key focus,
as seen with contrasting combinations that mixed traditional
techniques with performance technology, effectively creating a new
breed of fashion-forward yarns. Pitti’s ‘Feel the Yarn’ training
project was also popular, showcasing directional creations by the next
generation of designers and spinners. This week, Trendstop invites
FashionUnited readers to discover three essential fabric trends
analysed from Pitti Filati.

Cloudy Heavyweights

Knits are revamped with an intriguing
play on density for fall, as cloudy textures combine with heavyweight
qualities. Soft, fuzzy materials appeal to the touch in a range of
different yarns, while thick gauges create compact forms that lend extra
warmth to products.

Knotted & Twisted Cables

The traditional cable knit is updated with a contemporary twist,
creating tactile statements with knotted and twisted forms. Chunky
sections wrap around each other with wide gauges, emphasised by
contrast colourways. Other interpretations utilise a layering effect,
placing textured cabling over a dense knitted surface.

3D Minerals

Inspired by natural world formations, knitwear
takes a forward direction with three-dimensional surfaces that resemble
mineral textures. Raised patterns are key in abstract forms, as rock-like
motifs appear to float over sheer bases. Meanwhile, coated panels enhance
the hard, textural feel whilst adding a crystalline shine.
