Hello, and welcome to another edition of The Monitor, WIRED's look at all that's happening in the world of pop culture. Have you gotten over your Oscars hangover yet? Good, because we've got a new Dark Phoenix trailer, some sad news about The Suicide Squad, and Mahershala Ali's new sci-fi project all on deck. Step up.

Here's the New Dark Phoenix Trailer

Never ones to be outdone by one lone super-person, the X-Men crashed Captain Marvel's party last night to remind everyone, "Hey, we still exist! And our next movie has a female hero and a female villain!" Seriously, that's pretty much what Jessica Chastain said when she went on The Tonight Show to debut the new Dark Phoenix trailer. Whatever, the footage looks pretty cool.

Will Smith Won't Be in the Suicide Squad Sequel ‍

Likely anticipating that his role in the upcoming Aladdin reboot will make him rich enough to send his great-great grandkids to college, Will Smith won’t return for the Suicide Squad sequel, which is weirdly titled The Suicide Squad. Yes, the dream of more Deadshot is dead. James Gunn is writing and directing the film, which will hit theaters August 6, 2021.

Mahershala Ali Will Be in a Sci-Fi Film from the Arrival Team

Finally, some good news. Two-time Oscar winner Mahershala Ali is set to star in a sci-fi film from the producers behind Arrival and Stranger Things. Details of the plot are unknown, but the script comes from, among others, the duo behind A Quiet Place. Yes, it’s totally cool if you get excited now.
