Lyons Township High Expels Student
LA GRANGE, IL – The Lyons Township High School board voted unanimously Monday to expel a student.
The board did so after discussing the matter behind closed doors.
Members did not reveal the nature of the student’s conduct to warrant the discipline. Students are entitled to privacy under state and federal laws.

The board said it decided on the expulsion based on a recommendation, which typically comes from a hearing officer.
In June, the board expelled another student for “gross conduct and disobedience.” That expulsion was to last two years, effective immediately. In its latest action, the board did not indicate the time of the expulsion.

Expulsions are rare. Only the school board, not administrators, can make such decisions.
Shortly after a fight at South Campus in April 2022, West Cook News, a conservative online publication, reported that the suspected attacker was expelled. It said it got its information from an anonymous source.
The publication’s information was incorrect because the school board made no such decision. Perhaps the anonymous source confused a short-term suspension with an expulsion. The story remains online.
