HAVRE DE GRACE, MD — In the short amount of time since openings its doors April 21, people have flocked to the new Emmanuel Baptist Church in Havre de Grace.

The Baptist church operates out of a rented church building at 4100 Webster Rd. Pastor Joe McConkey, who launched his pastoral career with the new Emmanuel Baptist Church, told Patch that they are a “church plant” and adding more programs as they grow.

“One very exciting thing to point out is even at seven weeks old, we already had a core teen group established,” McConkey told Patch. “We also are honored to serve our seniors in the HDG Citizen Care home once a month. This service is a joy and a highlight of my month.”

As the only Emmanuel Baptist Church in Harford County and one of only three in Maryland, McConkey and other leaders welcomed 48 worshippers at their first Sunday service. So far, they’ve been averaging a congregational size ranging in the high 30s to low 40s so far since opening.

“Emmanuel’s theme ‘Is a Harbor of Grace of You.’ We desire to share the Gospel of Christ and help those who are in need. We want all to feel God’s love by our congregation,” McConkey told Patch. “We desire to please God by teaching and living the Holy Bible, we are always excited and humbled to guest come and worship Christ. We hope our church can be more than a church but a family.”

The congregation currently meets at 12:30 p.m. so that “young and old can enjoy their Sunday morning, then get over to church to worship God.” They plan to add Sunday evening and mid-week services soon. McConkey and his wife, Meg, also conduct Bible studies with new attendees during the week, too.
