IMPACT Finds Its Redemption, “One Fan at a Time”

The new IMPACT Wrestling regime headed by Scott D’Amore and Don Callis ran its first pay-per-view on Sunday night and, like the title implies, the company is pushing hard to find a measure of redemption by winning people back “one fan at a time”. That’s a phrase we’ve heard a lot recently. Whether it’s a branding gimmick or a genuine internal philosophy, it’s a surprisingly humble road back to relevance for a company that’s been proving themselves more and more in the weekly TV numbers.

The show was headlined by Pentagon Jr. (who can use his full name here because he’s considered a Lucha Underground star) winning the IMPACT World Championship in a triple threat match by actually pinning Austin Aries. It would appear that several of the Lucha Underground stars will continue working with IMPACT in a more prominent way going forward, as they are now recognized as legitimate partner promotions, but the biggest gets are easily Pentagon and Fenix.

Redemption was by all accounts an incredibly successful show, if critical and public reception are anything to go on. The matches that mattered and needed to show up absolutely did, with the main event, the House of Hardcore 6-man tag, and the 6-way scramble match all battling closely for Match of the Night. There were a few hits and misses, and some sort of issue with the ropes closes to the entrance ramp which caused numerous botches and missteps throughout the evening, but in total it was an easy and entertaining three hours that breezed right by.

Join us for live coverage of WWE RAW at 8/7c. WWE Universal Champion Brock Lesnar will be on hand for the go-home show heading into the Greatest Royal Rumble event this Friday. Plus, a brand new roster means brand new rivalries, match-ups and drama with fallout from last week’s Superstar Shake-up. More on the power struggle between Kurt Angle and Stephanie McMahon is also promised.
