South Dakota State made its season debut Sunday as it hosted the 21st Annual Warren Williamson/Daktronics Open in Frost Arena. SDSU had four placewinners on the day, highlighted by third-place finishes by Cody Pack (157 pounds) and Joe Brewster (165 pounds).

“This part of the season is all about getting matches,” head coach Chris Bono said. “Everything we do is working towards March. Today was a good day for us. We are excited to get back into the wrestling room and work on some things we saw.”

Pack opened the tournament with three consecutive bonus-point victories. The returning NCAA Championship qualifier won by fall, tech and major in his first three matches. After falling to Kyle Bradley (Missouri) 11-7 in the semifinals, Pack rallied and recorded back-to-back victories over Andrew Morse (Northern Illinois) 6-5 and Joseph LaValle (Missouri) 3-1 in the third-place match.

After splittling his first two matches, Brewster won his final four matches on the day to finish third. Brewster defeated Marcus Polak (Minot State) 17-5 and pinned NIU’s Trace Engelkes at 1:16 before earning decision wins over Tim Miklus (Unattached) and Brandon Wilbourn (Nebraska) 6-1 and 3-1, respectively.

In his Jackrabbit debut, redshirt freshman Alex Kocer went 7-2 on the day. Kocer opened the tournament with a pin and a major decision win over Nick Powerl (Iowa Central CC) and Beau Voegeli (Northern State), respectively. Kocer then tallied four wins in a row before falling to Jake Short (Unattached) in the third-place match.

After starting 1-1 on the day, 285-pounder J.J. Everard defeated NIU’s Arthur Bunce and Midland’s Lonnie Brown 5-2 and 9-4, respectively. Everard dropped his final two matches on the day to take fifth.

SDSU will open dual action Nov. 9 as it hosts Drexel at 11 a.m. The Jacks will welcome back former student-athletes for Alumni Weekend.
