He may be a hawk, but Mike Pompeo is good news for talks with North Korea

Dramatically firing his top diplomat shortly before what may be the United States’ most important foreign summit in years has been another bold move in President Trump’s unconventional playbook on foreign policy.

His decision to replace outgoing Secretary of State, Rex Tillerson, with the more hawkish CIA director Mike Pompeo, known for his hardline approach to North Korea, has also raised serious questions about the potential impact on his summit with Kim Jong-un, planned for as early as May.

Mr Pompeo has not endeared himself to Pyongyang in the past year. In October he quipped undiplomatically about toppling Mr Kim, saying that nobody should ask him about it if the North Korean leader suddenly…
