READ IT HERE: April 11, 2016 Wrestling Observer Newsletter: A look at a historic Wrestlemania weekend, NXT Takeover

During the 70s and 80s, Blackjack Mulligan was one of the legendary characters in pro wrestling, a man whose life and career had major ups and just as legendary downs.

Robert Deroy Windham played the character and later became the patriarch of one of the most significant modern wrestling families. He went from being a John Wayne-like figure as one of the most memorable characters in the heyday of Mid Atlantic Championship Wrestling, to a wrestler known for no-shows and walking out on promotions, and later spent two years in prison for counterfeiting.

He returned to wrestling after being in prison, but he was a guy who was quick to throw down, and quick to leave when he was unhappy. The business was changing where there weren’t the options to go somewhere and always have a job like in his heyday.

SATURDAY NEWS UPDATE

Will Ospreay put a picture of his injured knee on Instagram and announced he was out of this weekend’s Revolution Pro-Wrestling shows. He got hurt wrestling Juventud Guerrera for Lucha Britannia on Friday night and was due to face Michael Elgin on Saturday, and Ricochet on Sunday. Ricochet pulled double-duty to fight Elgin in Reading on Saturday in Ospreay’s place.

With the Islam Makhachev-Drew Dober fight being pulled from the show, the welterweight bout between Randy Brown and Michael Graves has been moved to the FOX prelims so the John Dodson-Manny Gamburyan fight will remain as the featured Fight Pass prelim. The start time of the Fight Pass portion has been moved to 4:30 pm eastern as well.

This week on 6:05 Superpodcast, David Bixenspan and Brian Last, the show features part one of an extended conversation with tape trader/smart fan extraordinaire John McAdam that covers John’s adventures at WCW shows in 1989, stories of promoting the UCW indie shows in New England, and much more. Also: Wrestlers in commercials, Dennis of the Week covers Dennis Coraluzzo’s adventures in Memphis meeting Nate the Rat, and much more.

UFC & Mixed Martial Arts

Rumors are making the rounds that Bellator is considering a double main event of Josh Koscheck/Paul Daley and Kimbo Slice/James Thompson to headline their debut show in London later this year. That would almost certainly be a tentpole show for them and would likely challenge the promotion’s ratings record as well. There is no date announced for the show but it will take place at the O2 Arena, which UFC has run in the past.
For people hoping for a Robbie Lawler title defence at UFC 200, it’s probably not going to happen. Dana White said yesterday that the welterweight champion will most likely defend his belt against Tyron Woodley at either UFC 201 or 202.
Cage Warriors results from yesterday on UFC Fight Pass: Jack Hermansson beat middleweight champion Alan Carlos by KO in the 3rd round to win the title; Featherweight prospect Paddy Pimblett moves to 10-1 with a decision over Ashleigh Grimshaw and in a 159 lb catchweight bout, Scott Clist scored a TKO stoppage after the first round round over Brad Wheeler to move to 9-2
RFA on AXS TV results from last night in Sioux Falls, SD: Devin Clark won the middleweight title with a TKO stoppage after the 2nd round over Rafael Viana; Leandro Higo won the bantamweight title with a decision win over Joey Miolla. Higo is now 17-2 and a prime candidate for a UFC callup; Joseph Gigliotta stayed perfect at 7-0 with a first round sub of John Poppie. He’s one to keep an eye on as he’s only 22 and has finished every one of his pro opponents.
Australian promotion BRACE also ran on UFC Fight Pass earlier today with a show featuring almost exclusively Australian regional fighters. Local product Theo Christakos got a first round submission over Canadian Kevin Manderson in the show’s main event.
