Getachew Melese Wins 20th Running of the ING Hartford Marathon,
New 5K Course Record Set by Wethersfield Local

HARTFORD, OCTOBER 12, 2013 ‰ÛÒ
The 20th running of the ING Hartford Marathon hosted more than 16,000
participants in marathon, half-marathon, 5K and kids races.  With the
celebratory ‰ÛÏCome Together‰Û theme, runners from across the country,
including seven finishing their 50 State Club quest, participated in
Connecticut‰Ûªs premier running event.  Getachew Melese, of Ethiopia, won
the marathon in 2:19:26.  He was followed by two runners from the New
England Finest class, an Elite program that encourages and rewards
regional talent. Coming in second with a time of 2:21:22, was Matt
Pelletier of West Greenwich, RI, who had placed third in the 2012 ING
Hartford Marathon.  Eric MacKnight, of Ballston Lake, NY, came in third
with a time of 2:22:21.  For the second straight year, New England‰Ûªs
Finest runners swept the top three women‰Ûªs marathon places.  With a
time of 2:38:13, Scarborough, ME runner Erica Jesseman won her second
ING Hartford Marathon.  Defending her 2012 ING Hartford Marathon win,
Hilary Dionne of Cambridge, MA, came in second with a time of 2:39:39. 
Sarah Bard of Somerville, MA, came in third at 2:43:16.

Top five men‰Ûªs marathon winners are:

        2:21:22 Matt Pelletier, 34, West Greenwich, RI
2:22:21 Eric MacKnight, 24, Ballston Lake, NY
2:25:23 Oz Pearlman, 31, New York, NY
2:26:43 Scott Leslie, 32, Rutland, MA
       
The
top three women‰Ûªs finishers are eligible for additional prize money as
part of the New England‰Ûªs Finest Elite program, which recognizes
talented runners from the region.

Top five women‰Ûªs marathon winners are:
        2:38:13 Erica Jesseman, 24, Scarborough, ME    
2:39:39 Hilary Dionne, 28, Cambridge, MA
        2:43:16 Sarah Bard, 29, Somerville, MA
        2:44:49 Aregash Abate, 22, High Falls, NY
        2:48:35 Katie Edwards, 31, South Glastonbury, CT
       
Kenyan
runners swept the 13.1 mile men‰Ûªs half marathon, with Julius Mbugua
winning in 1:05:13.  Second place finisher Kiplangat Terer, came in at
1:05:53.  With a time of 1:06:39, Benard Mwangi took third place.

 

Women‰Ûªs
half marathon winner Megan Hogan, of Saratoga Springs, NY, won with a
time of 1:13:19.  Pauline Wanjiru, of Kenya, came in second place with
a time of 1:13:26, and Desta Girma, of Ethiopia, took third place with
a time of 1:13:43.

Setting
a course record in the 5K men‰Ûªs race, Wethersfield, CT, runner William
Sanders took first place with a time of 14:55. With a time of 15:43,
Timothy Milenkevich, of Ansonia, CT, came in second.  Claiming third
place this year, John Longo of Southington, CT, came in at 17:00.

Women‰Ûªs
5K first place finisher was Christa Ferguson, of Wallingford, CT, with
a time of 18:20. Alison Migonis, of Hamilton, NY, came in second with a
time of 19:18. With a time of 20:43, Dani Kennedy of Bolton won third
place.
