Pub Titan Liam’s A Blast!
With seaside strides and cannon roars, the second stop on
the malt & hops tourÛÓLiam Maguire’s Almost 5-MilerÛÓis now in the books with
more than a day’s worth of memories included.
PCB Race Management outdid itself for the 2nd annual gala.
The weather managed a spritz at the end of the day but it was great racing
weather and the course is both fast and scenic.
Doyle’s winner David
Wilson ran unimpeded here to break the tape in 25:47 followed by GBTC’s Robert DeLeo in 26:24. Wilson allows
that while he loves the Series, he won’t be able to make the final 2 races, so
we’ll wait and see, but in the interim we will say that the iron of the order
arrived next with defending Pub Series champion TJ Unger the bronze medalist in 26:27 with HFC teammate and past
champ Lee Danforth 4th in 26:34 and
CSU’s Pat Bugbee 5th in 27:02.
Unger and Bugbee had both run Boston two weeks earlier.
Placing 6th and as top Master ($150) was SRR’s Joe “This is the first money I’ve ever won” O’Leary, now heading up
the Series’ Masters ranks.
Pub Queens, starting with overall Liam’s winner Kara Haas of Greater Lowell in 29:17, the BAA’s Amanda Watters next up in 30:02, and
teammate Mimi Fallon in 4th at
30:12. Kicking past Mimi (50) and almost catching Amanda was 24 year-old
Falmouth sprite Alex Watt in 30:02
(same time as Amanda). Add Holly Madden
in 5th and HFC’s Sarah Barrett in 6th
and there (minus Watt) are your top-5 Series Starlets.
Among the 100 or so revelers who exited Liam’s at noon for
the post-post race party at Bird Manor (and this included the band) it was
memorable. There was a barbeque of ribs & chicken, salad, other comestibles
and recently tapped kegs.
On hand and making his presence known was Bob “The Cannoneer” Richards of the
Falmouth TC, a former Spotlight subject in NER who makes high-end precision
equipment for the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute and aerospace Industry.
With his “chia” hair, Bob looked the part of a mad scientist with RD Courtney Bird a willing sidekick and
supplier of dummy 12-gauge shotgun shells for the good sized cannon Bob had
made on a beer bet back in 2005.

This baby packs a wallop and as the day wore on it went from
concussive single rounds to triple shots.
All Pub Series is underway as we point the wagon to McGreal’s Tavern and the
Evan’s Run 5K on May 22.
