Brooklyn Hosts Ruth Bader Ginsburg Birthday Party Friday

DOWNTOWN, BROOKLYN — A hometown celebration for U.S. Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg’s 85th birthday on Friday will also be a call for the celebration to continue, in the form of renaming the Brooklyn Municipal Building.

Brooklyn Borough President Eric Adams will host a birthday party for the Brooklynite justice beginning at 8 a.m. at the Joralemon Street municipal building. The party, which he is calling #RallyforRuth, will also call on the city to rename the building in Ginsburg’s honor.

Adams already has more than 60,000 signatures in an online petition to do so.

“Society often waits to recognize a lifetime of accomplishment until after that lifetime ends. In this case, we can honor the life and service of Ruth Bader Ginsburg during what we hope will be a long and active remaining life,” the petition reads.

Ginsburg’s life has become a “quintessential New York Story,” Adams said. The justice grew up in Flatbush as the daughter of Jewish immigrants.

Last August, right before Adams started the petition, Ginsburg celebrated 25 years on the U.S. Supreme Court. At the time she was named to the bench, she was only the second woman to sit on the highest court.

“Ruth Bader Ginsburg has become an icon, affectionately referred to as the “Notorious RBG,” the petition continues. “In an era where popular culture puts performing artists and sports stars on a public pedestal, Ruth Bader Ginsburg has risen to incredible levels of iconic admiration and love.”

Adams said that it seems the only thing necessary to rename the building would be an executive action by the Office of the Mayor, similar to the action that renamed the Manhattan Municipal Building in honor of former Mayor David Dinkins.

“With this understanding, we urge Mayor Bill de Blasio to rename Joralemon Street’s Brooklyn Municipal Building for the Honorable Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg,” the petition said.

The birthday party will be held from 8 a.m. to 9 a.m. on Friday outside the 209 Joralemon Street building. Signs with birthday greetings are encouraged and attendees can RSVP here.
