USMNT goalkeeper Hamid returns to D.C. United on loan

The goalkeeper left for Europe at the end of last season but is back with the club on loan through the 2019 campaign

Bill Hamid is headed back to D.C. United. 

Having left the club to chase his European dreams at the end of the 2017 MLS season, the goalkeeper has now returned to the nation’s capital on loan through the 2019 season. 

The 27-year-old broke in with United in 2010 and became the youngest goalkeeper in MLS history to win a game as a starter.

He was named the 2014 MLS Goalkeeper of the Year, but made the jump to Europe to join Danish side FC Midtjylland after another standout campaign last year. 

“Bill moved to FC Midtjylland at the end of last year and it was an important step in his personal and professional development,” United GM Dave Kasper said in a club statement. “He’s a major part of the fabric of this club with his local ties, homegrown history and on-field accomplishments, so bringing him back on loan is a great acquisition as we make a push for playoffs at Audi Field.

“He’s a leader on and off the field and we’re excited to welcome him back to the club he worked tirelessly for over eight seasons.”

United has made a splash this summer, opening a new home in Audi Field and signing former Manchester United and Everton standout Wayne Rooney. 

Bringing Hamid back will be another boost to the club as they chase a spot in the MLS playoffs, though the club has plenty of work to do to earn their play in the post-season. 

United has picked up just 18 points through 19 matches this season and sits bottom of the Eastern Conference table, though the schedule is back-loaded with home matches and the club holds at least three games in hand on every other team in the conference. 

The club currently sits 11 points back of the sixth and final playoff spot.
