Princess Eugenie’s Wedding Dress Was Specifically Designed to Highlight Her Surgery Scars

When Princess Eugenie stepped into St. George’s Chapel at Windsor Castle wearing her Peter Pilotto and Christopher De Vos dress, the crowd behind her audibly gasped. It only takes five seconds to see why — she looks positively stunning — but it turns out her beautiful wedding day look has even more meaning than we initially thought.

The low back of the dress isn’t just a cute design feature. It was purposefully dipped low and draped into the long train in order to showcase Princess Eugenie’s back and the surgery scars she has there.

People reports that Eugenie requested the low back so that her scars — which she got after having surgery at age 12 to correct her scoliosis — were very clearly visible.

A few months before walking down the aisle, Eugenie opened up more about the importance of showing “people your scars” after revealing her diagnosis and treatment for the first time.

“I had an operation when I was 12 on my back, and you’ll see on Friday [at the wedding], but it’s a lovely way to honour the people who looked after me and a way of standing up for young people who also go through this,” she told ITV’s This Morning. “I think you can change the way beauty is, and you can show people your scars and I think it’s really special to stand up for that.”

What a special moment from a special day.
