Silent Discos, Neon Snowboarding & Fresh Perspectives: CT This Weekend

January 1, 2025 0 By JohnValbyNation

CONNECTICUT — The black bears in Connecticut are all in hibernation now, and so are the big even promoters. You’ll be hard-pressed to find a fair, parade or fireworks celebration anywhere this time of the year in the state — but neon snowboarding and silent discos? Yeah, we got those…

If your New Year’s resolution is to start eating healthy/shopping local, there’s no better place to be on Jan. 4 than New Haven. The CitySeed Winter Farmers’ Market will be open from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., the first weekend of its sprint through the end of March at the Conte School. The markets provide a direct connection to more than 50 Connecticut vendors, including farms, nurseries, bakeries, cheese makers, and specialty food producers. CitySeed accepts SNAP and doubles the value of SNAP for fresh produce.

This certainly sounds cool: Powder Ridge Mountain Park in Middlefield is holding an “Interstellar Rail Jam” on Friday, Jan. 3 from 5 to 8 p.m. Expect neon lights, a DJ, free swag, and free admission with a 2025 season pass or lift pass.

But will it be “Fresh Start Silent Disco Party” cool? Aquila’s Nest Vineyards in Newtown will provide each guest with a pair of headphones that are connected to multiple music feeds, where they can choose which channel to listen to based on their personal preferences. Organizers say a silent disco dance party can be “incredibly immersive and personal.” We say it sounds like a scene from a William Gibson novel. Make up your own mind, on Jan. 4 from 6 to 8 p.m. in the winery’s indoors tasting room. Tickets are available online here.

Different vineyard, different vibe, in Wallingford on Jan. 3. Indefatigable Connecticut club fixture Chris Marolda will play an eclectic mix of rock, folk, funk and blues at the Paradise Hills Vineyard from 5 to 8 p.m. Seating is indoors, first come, first served. No reservations are needed.

If you’re wondering what put her on that career path and what you can learn from her, get in line at The Bruce Museum for the first in 2025’s “Meet for Coffee at the Bruce” series. The admission is free, the coffee is free, but the seating is limited, so register online here. Get your answers Saturday, Jan. 4, 9:00-10:30 a.m. at Aux Délices at the Bruce Café in the museum.

Come for the Love, stay for the giant, spiky, but-vaguely fuzzy-from-a-distance-looking and overall unforgettable art installation created by Brooklyn artist Tara Donovan. The untitled work in acrylic and adhesive has been on exhibition at the Bruce since May, and like many of the Bruce’s exhibits, blurs the line between art and science. On Jan 4–5, families can create their own Donovan-inspired 3D sculptures at a drop-in program designed for children aged 4 and up, free with general admission and no advanced registration is required.
