In applications that require autoclaving to kill bacteria, steam pressure and high heat can create a range of problems and special considerations for components. For metallic bearings, the high heat and steam used in the autoclaving process requires special lubrication; however, sterilization can be limited by use of these lubricants. To resolve this important issue in the production of food products and pharmaceuticals, as well as in the cleaning of medical tools, igus has developed a new, self-lubricating bearing material, resistant to steam, pressure, and moisture.

The new iglide HSD350 material is suitable for continuous use in hygienic conditions, even with regular sterilization. The material is able to withstand continuous temperatures of 356º F, with temporary exposure to temperatures as high as 410º. Low moisture absorption and thermal expansion makes the material ideal for use in steam chambers and autoclaves, providing bearings and joints which allow for high levels of sterilization, even in complex, non-separable units.
