Ski Area In Southington Gets Major Tax Break
SOUTHINGTON, CT — One of the town’s largest attractions will get a break on its property taxes following a Southington Town Council vote earlier this month.
The Southington Town Council voted unanimously at its last meeting Aug. 12 to approve a sizable tax abatement for Mount Southington, a major ski resort in town.
According to Southington Economic Development Director Louis A. Perillo III, the abatement is for two large improvement projects recently completed by the resort.

Those, he said, included a $650,000 chair lift on the north ridge and a $400,000 snow sports building.
Earlier this summer, the Southington Economic Development Strike Committee voted to recommend the tax abatement’s approval by the town council, Perillo said.

Perillo said Mt. Southington “is an incredible resource and is part of our recreation destination program.”
In January, the town council approved revising local regulations to allow for such tax abatements, specifically as they apply to operations like sports/recreation instruction; theatre organizations; sports teams/clubs; amusement/theme parks; and skiing facilities.
Perillo said both Mt. Southington projects fit the standard.
“So the projects are eligible for our tax abatement,” Perillo said.
According to what was approved on Jan. 22 by the council, the town would grant an applicant an 80 percent tax break on the new construction, with half the amount eligible for state reimbursement.
The duration of the abatement would be five years.
