West Orange Council Makes Decision On Garbage, Recycling Collection

WEST ORANGE, NJ — After much discussion, the Great Garbage Debate in West Orange has been settled. And things will remain the same – for now.

With the cost of trash and recycling collection soaring, West Orange officials have been considering the possibility of making service changes. Several council discussions on the issue have taken place over the past few months, including a public hearing held in June.

Four main options were put on the table, with only a few dollars per month separating each choice:

The debate was settled at the West Orange Town Council meeting on Tuesday, when council president Bill Rutherford announced that he and his peers are going with “option one”: keeping everything exactly the same.

“We are going to aggressively look at what our options are starting early next year, so we can be prepared for the end of this contract, should we wish to make any changes,” Rutherford said.

Those changes could include whether the town would use its own garbage receptacles or not – a point that the council disagreed on, Rutherford said.

Another issue that may resurface is garbage/recycling collections for local businesses, Councilwoman Michelle Casalino added (watch the video below, cued to their comments).

With the question settled about what “option” to choose, the council voted to approve a resolution that awards an $18.5 million contract to Fairfield-based Suburban Disposal Inc., which was one of three companies that originally submitted bids in connection with the four options.

Other bids were received by Century Waste ($18.9 million) and Filco Carting ($17.51 million). Filco was rejected because it didn’t provide prices for options two, three and four.

The bid period of three years started on June 1, 2024 and will end on May 31, 2027. The town will have the option to renew the contract for two additional one-year periods – meaning the contract could potentially last until May 31, 2029.
