Pet Of The Week: Sweet Shyra Comes With A Whole Lotta Love

July 20, 2024 0 By JohnValbyNation

BABYLON, NY — “Sweet” Shyra is a resident of the Babylon Animal Shelter and is Patch’s Pet of the Week.

“This beautiful girl is two years old and is ready for her family to scoop her up,” long-time shelter volunteer Christine Franke told Patch. “Shyra is super sweet but shy. We are looking for someone who can be compassionate and understanding while helping guide Shyra and show her what a real family is.”

According to Franke, Shyra was bred in a “backyard environment,” which means she endured irresponsible breeding in inadequate conditions with insufficient care, most likely by people with little experience or knowledge.

“It is still shocking to see these wonderful sweet dogs that arrive with terrible pasts,” Franke said. “Shrya’s puppies first arrived at the shelter and found their homes quickly. Shyra arrived a few weeks later sad and confused.”

But Shyla’s a true diamond in the rough. Frank says Shyra has a lot of love to give and the shelter staff hopes she’ll “find her people soon.”

But time is ticking for Shyra to get the love she deserves—and share the love she has to give.

Her one-year anniversary at the shelter is August 2, far too long for any animal to spend couped up.

Franke, an experienced dog handler, says shy dogs like Shyra needs a little more support at first but are the ones who become the best dogs and the most grateful.

“Our motto is never to give up on the shy dogs, the scared dogs, the ones that need some patience and extra TLC. It is a very rewarding experience for the person and the dog,” Franke said.

To give Shyra her forever family or find another potential soulmate, please call the Babylon Animal Shelter at 631-643-9270. Her identification number is 23-319.

“Our shelter is full and we are in dire need of adoptions, or even fosters which can save a dog’s life,” Franke said.

Normal adoption hours at the shelter are Monday to Friday from 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. and on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.

In the meantime, the shelter needs experienced large dog handlers and its staff is happy to train interested dog lovers.

There’s also an abundance of bunnies, kittens and cats to spend time with too, Franke said. Anyone interested in volunteering may contact the shelter by calling the number above or emailing [email protected].
