Madison Voters Deny Selectmen's $2.4M Appropriation Request

MADISON, CT – Town of Madison Voters denied the request of the Board of Selectmen to appropriate $2.4 million for the new school construction on July 24.

With the cost of the new elementary school going up between $5.9 million and $7.5 million, Madison’s Board of Selectmen issued a town meeting to appropriate $2.4 million from the town’s unassigned balance.

The shortfall came after revising the cost estimates for the new school construction to include the design development plan and additional classrooms.

There were three questions voters answered with a yes or no.

The first question was “To make a special appropriation of $2.4 million from the Town’s unassigned fund balance for the Town project; construction of additional classrooms for the new Pre-Kindergarten to fifth-grade school on Mungertown Road.”

The results of the voting were 56 yes and 215 no votes.

The second question was, “To authorize the First Selectman to execute agreements and other documents on behalf of the officials and employees and to allow the Board of Selectmen, Board of Finance, Director of Finance, and other Town to take all actions necessary and proper to carry out the project.”

The voting results were 69 yes and 202 no votes.

The third question was, “to authorize the First Selectman to apply for and accept or reject grants-in-aid for the project.”

The results of the vote were 110 yes and 160 no votes.

The next new elementary school building committee meeting is scheduled for Monday, Aug. 7.
