Community Rallies For Flanders Ambulance Volunteer, School Bus Driver

FLANDERS, NY — The community is opening their hearts to a Flanders man who has spent a lifetime giving back.

“In February 2023, our beloved husband, father and grandfather, Fred Jr. was diagnosed with pancreatic and liver cancer,” a GiveSendGo page, Supporting Fred Korte, said.

Korte, the page said, has been an active member of the Flanders-Northampton Volunteer Ambulance Corps for more than 35 years and served on the board; he is also a dedicated school bus driver, “with a love for all the students and an overall staple of the community.”

Unfortunately, the page said, “due to the aggressive nature of his diagnosis, he will be unable to work during these times. While insurance will cover some of the costs of treatment and some medications, the cost of transportation, meals, medications and everyday expenses are beginning to pile up.”

With the added financial burden, help is needed, those who love him said.

“Any amount would be appreciated and more helpful than you can ever know. Thank you all, God bless and, please, keep us all, especially Fred Jr,. in your prayers,” the page said.

Those whose lives he’s touched also reached out to share the page.

“When our community needs an ambulance, you get the help you need and that’s because of volunteers like Fred Korte,” friend Susan Tocci said. “He’s been there to help our community — now i’ts his turn to receive some help back in his fight against his recent diagnosis of pancreatic and liver cancer. If you can donate any amount, it all adds up. He’s got a fight on his hands but with support and help, as he has helped others, he can kick cancers a–!”

Korte’s wife Veronica told Patch how grateful they are for the outpouring of love: “We appreciate all the support we’ve been shown so far, and I’m very thankful and very blessed,” she said.
