WPL: Aussie World Cup Winner Beth Mooney Will Be Leading Gujarat Giants

One day after hitting an unbeaten 74 in the Women’s T20 World Cup final, Beth Mooney was named the captain of Gujarat Giants in the WPL, as per TOI.

Mooney is at the moment the top-ranked batter in T20Is. She has been part of Australia’s Women’s T20 World Cup titles in 2018, 2020 and 2023 plus the Women’s ODI World Cup in 2022. She also won gold at the 2022 Commonwealth Games.

She has scored 2350 runs in 83 T20Is. That includes 2 100s and 17 50s. She is also a 3-time WBBL winner. 

“I am delighted to be given the opportunity to lead the Adani Gujarat Giants in the historic Women’s Premier League’s inaugural edition in 2023,” an official release quoted Mooney as saying.

“The squad is keen to get the ball rolling soon and put out an entertaining and effective brand of cricket in the debut season of WPL which will hopefully lead us to the trophy. It will be absolutely fantastic to have the likes of Sneh as my deputy and Mithali Raj, Rachael Haynes and Nooshin Al Khadeer as pivotal parts of the team,” she added. 

The first edition of the WPL starts on March 4 and concludes on March 26.
